Man and the Biosphere – MAB is an international scientific program started by UNESCO in 1971. The aim is to promote on a scientific base a balanced relationship between man and the environment by protecting biodiversity and good practices of sustainable development.
The Program aims at enhancing the relationships between people and the environment where they live. Promoting innovative approaches to economic development and sustainable from an environmental, cultural and social point of view. The main objective is the use and rational and sustainable sharing of the biosphere resources. To achieve this, it has to efficiently manage natural resources, for the well-being of human beings and the environment.
The MAB includes the Biosphere Reserves of terrestrial, marine / coastal ecosystems or a combination of them. They promote scientific cooperation activities, interdisciplinary research and environmental sustainability involving local communities.
The World Network of Biosphere Reserves includes 686 Reserves (20 trans-border) in 122 counties, of which 17 in Italy. In Trentino there is the Ledro Alps and Judicaria Reserve in the Adamello Brenta Nature Park.
