Adamello Brenta Geopark

The Geopark candidacy

Campanil BassoThe Adamello Brenta Nature Park has applied to become the fourth Italian Geopark in the UNESCO world network of Geoparks in 2008.  The candidacy dossier, compiled by the Park in collaboration with the Trento Natural Science Museum and the Geology Department of the Autonomous Province of Trento, has been presented to the Geopark network Coordination Committee and is currently being verified.  Recognition as a Geopark will entitle the Park to use a prestigious logo known throughout the world.

Why a European Geopark?

Because the Park has all the characteristics necessary for recognition as a European Geopark.
The Adamello Brenta Geopark has:

  • an extraordinary geological heritage
  • numerous geological sites of particular importance for their scientific quality, rarity, beauty or educational value
  • numerous sites of archaeological, ecological, historical or cultural interest
  • a policy of sustainable development implemented through the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism action programme
  • environmental education, training and scientific research activities in the various Earth Sciences disciplines
  • activities aimed at promoting sustainable geotourism

The area of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park which has applied to become the Adamello Brenta Geopark includes both the protected area itself and neighbouring municipalities for a total of 1146 km².
Its boundaries are well defined and it is sufficiently large to guarantee effective economic development in the area concerned.

The geological mosaic of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park

The extraordinary cathedral of sedimentary rocks (dolomite and limestone) in the Brenta Group, the exceptionally hard magma rock in the Adamello-Presanella massif, the karst phenomena of the Vallesinella and the fossil cemetery in the Val d'Ambiez...  these are some of the pieces in the great geological mosaic of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park. The peculiarity of the Park lies in the presence of two completely different geological and geomorphologic worlds - on one hand, the Brenta Dolomites profoundly modelled by karstification, on the other, the Adamello-Presanella, characterised by glacial phenomena. The Adamello Brenta Geopark project is being implemented in collaboration with the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali and the Servizio Geologico of the Autonomous Province of Trento.
